Tontonbeya, which translates from Japanese to “Gambler,” is a logic puzzle published by Nikoli that will test your deduction skills. Like most logic puzzles, the rules are deceptively simple, but unraveling the solution can be a rewarding mental workout.
Here’s the gist: Imagine a rectangular or square grid divided into regions. Your objective is to fill each cell with either squares, circles, or triangles. The catch? Here’s where things get interesting.
- Same Type, Same Count: Within a single region, you can have any combination of shapes, but if you have multiple shapes (say, squares and circles), the number of each shape must be identical.
- Shape Up and Connect: All figures of the same type within a region must be connected horizontally or vertically, forming a single block.
- Block Buddies: Each block of the same shape within a region must have an adjacent block of the same shape in another region. However, a block shouldn’t be connected to two or more blocks of the same shape in other regions.
Tips to Tame the Tontonbeya:
- Don’t Rush to Fill in the Blanks: Tontonbeya rewards a strategic approach. Resist the urge to guess and instead, use a process of elimination. Consider where certain shapes can’t go based on the rules and the relationships between regions.
- Embrace the Power of Pencilling: Don’t be afraid to tentatively place shapes in cells (use a pencil if you’re worried about commitment!). This will help you visualize the potential consequences of your placements and steer you towards the correct solution.
